This was an interesting post. I'm not at all surprised it took you a while to feel comfortable there. I have lived in France and get along okay in France. I feel comfortable there, but I can't say it feels like home. Of course I don't live there permanently. We will be heading back to Normandy in 3 weeks for a visit of one month.
